1 Der MenschMensch, von einer FrauFrau geboren, ist kurz an Tagen und mit Unruhe gesättigt.1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.1
2 Wie eine Blume kommt er hervor und verwelkt; und er flieht wie der Schatten und hat keinen Bestand.2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3 Dennoch hast du über einen solchen deine AugenAugen geöffnet, und mich führst du ins GerichtGericht mit dir! 3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
4 Wie könnte ein Reiner aus einem Unreinen kommen? Nicht ein einziger!4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.2
5 Wenn denn bestimmt sind seine TageTage, die Zahl seiner MondeMonde bei dir sind1, wenn du ihm Schranken gesetzt hast, die er nicht überschreiten darf, 5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 so blicke von ihm weg, dass er RuheRuhe habe, bis er wie ein TagelöhnerTagelöhner seinen TagTag vollende2.6 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.3
7 Denn für den Baum gibt es HoffnungHoffnung: Wird er abgehauen, so schlägt er wieder aus, und seine Schösslinge hören nicht auf.7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 Wenn seine Wurzel in der ErdeErde altert, und sein Stumpf im Boden erstirbt:8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 vom Duft des Wassers sprosst er wieder auf und treibt Zweige wie ein Pflänzling.9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 Der MannMann aber stirbt und liegt da; und der MenschMensch verscheidet, und wo ist er?10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?4
11 Es verrinnen die Wasser aus dem See, und der FlussFluss trocknet ein und versiegt:11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
12 so legt der MenschMensch sich hin und steht nicht wieder auf; bis die HimmelHimmel nicht mehr sind, erwachen sie nicht und werden nicht aufgeweckt aus ihrem Schlaf.12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
13 O dass du in dem ScheolScheol mich verstecktest, mich verbärgest, bis dein ZornZorn sich abwendete, mir eine Frist setztest und dann meiner gedächtest!13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 (Wenn ein MannMann stirbt, wird er wieder leben?) Alle TageTage meiner Dienstzeit3 wollte ich harren, bis meine Ablösung4 käme! 14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
15 Du würdest rufen, und ich würde dir antworten; du würdest dich sehnen nach dem Werk deiner Hände.15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
16 Denn nun zählst du meine Schritte; wachst du nicht über meine SündeSünde5?16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
17 Meine Übertretung ist versiegelt in einem Bündel, und du hast hinzugefügt zu meiner Ungerechtigkeit. 17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
18 Und doch, ein BergBerg stürzt ein6, zerfällt, und ein FelsFels rückt weg von seiner Stelle;18 And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.5
19 Wasser zerreiben die SteineSteine, ihre Fluten schwemmen den StaubStaub der ErdeErde weg; aber du machst zunichte die HoffnungHoffnung des Menschen.19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.6
20 Du überwältigst ihn für immer, und er geht dahin; sein Angesicht entstellend, sendest du ihn weg.20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21 Seine KinderKinder kommen zu Ehren, und er weiß es nicht; und sie werden gering, und er achtet nicht auf sie.21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
22 Nur um ihn selbst hat sein FleischFleisch Schmerz, und nur um ihn selbst empfindet seine SeeleSeele TrauerTrauer.22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
