1 Auch diese sind Sprüche Salomos, die die Männer Hiskias, des Königs von Juda, zusammengetragen haben:

2 Gottes Ehre ist es, eine Sache zu verbergen, aber der Könige Ehre, eine Sache zu erforschen.

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

3 Die Höhe des Himmels, und die Tiefe der Erde, und das Herz der Könige sind unerforschlich.

3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.¹

4 Man entferne die Schlacken von dem Silber, so geht für den Goldschmied ein Gerät hervor;

4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.

5 man entferne den Gottlosen vor dem König, so wird sein Thron durch Gerechtigkeit feststehen.

5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6 Brüste dich nicht vor dem König, und stelle dich nicht an den Platz der Großen.

6 Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:²

7 Denn besser ist es, dass man dir sage: Komm hier herauf, als dass man dich vor dem Edlen erniedrige, den deine Augen doch gesehen haben.

7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.

8 Geh nicht eilig zu einem Rechtsstreit aus, damit an dessen Ende nicht fraglich werde, was du zu tun hast, wenn dein Nächster dich beschämt. –

8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

9 Führe deinen Rechtsstreit mit deinem Nächsten, aber enthülle nicht das Geheimnis eines anderen;

9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:³

10 damit wer es hört dich nicht schmähe, und dein übler Ruf nicht mehr weiche.

10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

11 Goldene Äpfel in silbernen Prunkgeräten: So ist ein Wort, geredet zu seiner Zeit¹.

11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.⁴

12 Ein goldener Ohrring und ein Halsgeschmeide von feinem Gold: So ist ein weiser Tadler für ein hörendes Ohr.

20 Einer, der das Oberkleid ablegt am Tag der Kälte, Essig auf Natron: So ist, wer einem traurigen Herzen Lieder singt.

21 Wenn deinen Hasser hungert, speise ihn mit Brot, und wenn ihn dürstet, tränke ihn mit Wasser;
