1 Woher kommen KriegeKriege und woher Streitigkeiten unter euch? Nicht daher: aus euren Lüsten, die in euren Gliedern streiten? 1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?12
2 Ihr gelüstet und habt nichts1; ihr tötet und neidet2 und könnt nichts3 erlangen; ihr streitet und kriegt; ihr habt nichts4, weil ihr nicht bittet; 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 ihr bittet und empfangt nichts5, weil ihr übel bittet, damit ihr es in euren Lüsten vergeudet. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.3
4 Ihr Ehebrecherinnen, wisst ihr nicht, dass die Freundschaft der WeltWelt Feindschaft gegen GottGott ist? Wer nun irgend ein Freund der WeltWelt sein will, stellt sich als Feind GottesGottes dar. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Oder meint ihr, dass die Schrift vergeblich rede? Begehrt der GeistGeist, der in uns wohnt6, mit Neid?5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?45
6 Er gibt aber größere GnadeGnade; deshalb spricht er: „GottGott widersteht den Hochmütigen, den Demütigen aber gibt er GnadeGnade.“76 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Unterwerft euch nun GottGott. Widersteht dem TeufelTeufel, und er wird von euch fliehen. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Naht euch8 GottGott, und er wird sich euch nahen. Säubert die Hände, ihr Sünder, und reinigt die Herzen, ihr Wankelmütigen9.8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Seid niedergebeugt10 und trauert und weint; euer Lachen verwandle sich in Traurigkeit und eure FreudeFreude in Niedergeschlagenheit.9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Demütigt euch vor dem HerrnHerrn, und er wird euch erhöhen.10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
11 Redet nicht gegeneinander, BrüderBrüder. Wer gegen seinen BruderBruder redet oder seinen BruderBruder richtet, redet gegen das GesetzGesetz und richtet das GesetzGesetz. Wenn du aber das GesetzGesetz richtest, so bist du nicht ein Täter des GesetzesGesetzes, sondern ein RichterRichter.11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
12 Einer ist der GesetzgeberGesetzgeber und RichterRichter, der11 zu erretten und zu verderben vermag. Du aber, wer bist du, der du den Nächsten richtest?12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
13 Wohlan denn, die ihr sagt: Heute oder morgen wollen wir in die und die Stadt gehen und dort ein JahrJahr zubringen und Handel treiben und GewinnGewinn machen 13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 (die ihr nicht wisst, was der morgige TagTag bringen wird; [denn] was ist euer LebenLeben? Ein Dampf ist es12 ja, der eine kleine ZeitZeit sichtbar ist und dann verschwindet); 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.6
15 statt dass ihr sagt: Wenn der HerrHerr will und wir leben, so werden wir auch dieses oder jenes tun.15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 Nun aber rühmt ihr euch in euren Großtuereien. Alles solches Rühmen ist böse.16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
17 Wer nun weiß, Gutes zu tun, und tut es nicht, dem ist es SündeSünde.17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
