1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

1 Und Eliphas, der Temaniter, antwortete und sprach:

2 Can a man be profitable to *God? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

2 Kann ein Mann Gott Nutzen bringen? Vielmehr sich selbst nützt der Einsichtige.

3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect?

3 Liegt dem Allmächtigen daran, wenn du gerecht bist, oder ist es ihm ein Gewinn, wenn du deine Wege vollkommen machst?

4 Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

4 Ist es wegen deiner Gottesfurcht, daß er dich straft, mit dir ins Gericht geht?

5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?

5 Ist nicht deine Bosheit groß, und deiner Missetaten kein Ende?

10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

10 Darum sind Schlingen rings um dich her, und ein plötzlicher Schrecken macht dich bestürzt.

11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.

11 Oder siehst du nicht die Finsternis und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt?

12 Is not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!

12 Ist Gott nicht so hoch wie die Himmel? Sieh doch den Gipfel der Sterne³, wie erhaben sie sind!

13 And thou sayest, What doth *God know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

17 die zu Gott⁵ sprachen: Weiche von uns! und was könnte der Allmächtige für uns tun⁶?

18 Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

18 Und doch hatte er ihre Häuser mit Wohlstand erfüllt. - Aber der Rat der Gesetzlosen sei⁷ fern von mir! -

19 The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

19 Die Gerechten sehen es und freuen sich, und der Schuldlose spottet ihrer:

20 Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

20 Sind nicht unsere Gegner vertilgt, und hat nicht Feuer ihren Überfluß gefressen?

21 Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

21 Verkehre doch freundlich mit ihm und halte⁸ Frieden; dadurch wird Wohlfahrt über dich kommen.

22 Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

22 Empfange doch Belehrung aus seinem Munde, und nimm dir seine Worte zu Herzen.

23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,

23 Wenn du zu dem Allmächtigen umkehrst, so wirst du wieder aufgebaut werden; wenn du Unrecht entfernst aus deinen Zelten.

24 And put the precious ore with the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrents,

24 Und lege das Golderz in den Staub und das Gold von Ophir unter den Kies der Bäche;

25 Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;

25 so wird der Allmächtige dein Golderz und dein glänzendes Silber sein.

26 Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:

26 Denn dann wirst du an dem Allmächtigen dich ergötzen und zu Gott dein Angesicht erheben.

27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

27 Du wirst zu ihm beten, und er wird dich erhören; und deine Gelübde wirst du bezahlen.

28 And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.

28 Beschließest du eine Sache, so wird sie zustande kommen, und Licht wird strahlen über deinen Wegen.

29 When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.

29 Wenn sie abwärts gehen, so wirst du sagen: Empor! und den, der mit gesenkten Augen einhergeht, wird er⁹ retten.

30 Even him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.

30 Selbst den Nicht-Schuldlosen wird er befreien: er wird befreit werden durch die Reinheit deiner Hände.
