1 Auch diese sind Sprüche Salomos, welche die Männer Hiskias, des Königs von Juda, zusammengetragen haben:

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; but the glory of kings is to search out a thing.

2 Gottes Ehre ist es, eine Sache zu verbergen, aber der Könige Ehre, eine Sache zu erforschen.

3 The heavens for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

3 Der Himmel an Höhe, und die Erde an Tiefe, und das Herz der Könige sind unerforschlich.

4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:

4 Man entferne die Schlacken von dem Silber, so geht für den Goldschmied ein Gerät hervor.

5 take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

5 Man entferne den Gesetzlosen vor dem König, so wird sein Thron feststehen durch Gerechtigkeit.

6 Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of the great;

6 Brüste dich nicht vor dem König, und stelle dich nicht an den Platz der Großen.

7 for better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes see.

7 Denn besser ist es, daß man dir sage: Komm hier herauf, als daß man dich erniedrige vor dem Edlen, den deine Augen doch gesehen haben.

8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

8 Geh nicht eilig aus zu einem Streithandel, damit am Ende davon nicht fraglich werde, was du zu tun hast, wenn dein Nächster dich beschämt. -

9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour, but reveal not the secret of another;

9 Führe deinen Streithandel mit deinem Nächsten, aber enthülle nicht das Geheimnis eines anderen;

10 lest he that heareth it disgrace thee, and thine evil report turn not away.

20 Einer, der das Oberkleid ablegt am Tage der Kälte, Essig auf Natron: so wer einem traurigen Herzen Lieder singt.

21 Wenn deinen Hasser hungert, speise ihn mit Brot, und wenn ihn dürstet, tränke ihn mit Wasser;
