1 Let every soul be subject to the authorities that are above him . For there is no authority except from God; and those that exist are set up by God.1 Jede SeeleSeele unterwerfe sich den obrigkeitlichen GewaltenGewalten; denn es ist keine Obrigkeit1, außer von GottGott, und diese, welche sind, sind von GottGott verordnet.
2 So that he that sets himself in opposition to the authority resists the ordinance of God; and they who thus resist shall bring sentence of guilt on themselves.2 Wer sich daher der Obrigkeit widersetzt, widersteht der AnordnungAnordnung GottesGottes; die aber widerstehen, werden ein Urteil2 über sich bringen3.
3 For rulers are not a terror to a good work, but to an evil one . Dost thou desire then not to be afraid of the authority? practise what is good, and thou shalt have praise from it;3 Denn die Regenten sind nicht ein Schrecken für das gute Werk, sondern für das böse. Willst du dich aber vor der Obrigkeit nicht fürchten? So übe das Gute, und du wirst LobLob von ihr haben;
4 for it is God's minister to thee for good. But if thou practisest evil, fear; for it bears not the sword in vain; for it is God's minister, an avenger for wrath to him that does evil.4 denn sie ist GottesGottes Dienerin, dir zum Guten. Wenn du aber das Böse übst, so fürchte dich, denn sie trägt das SchwertSchwert nicht umsonst; denn sie ist GottesGottes Dienerin, eine Rächerin zur Strafe4 für den, der Böses tut.
5 Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only on account of wrath, but also on account of conscience.5 Darum ist es notwendig, untertan zu sein, nicht allein der Strafe5 wegen, sondern auch des GewissensGewissens wegen.
6 For on this account ye pay tribute also; for they are God's officers, attending continually on this very thing.6 Denn dieserhalb entrichtet ihr auch SteuernSteuern; denn sie sind GottesGottes Beamte, die eben hierzu fortwährend beschäftigt sind.
7 Render to all their dues: to whom tribute is due , tribute; to whom custom, custom; to whom fear, fear; to whom honour, honour.7 GebetGebet allen, was ihnen gebührt: die Steuer, dem die Steuer, den ZollZoll, dem der ZollZoll, die Furcht, dem die Furcht, die Ehre, dem die Ehre gebührt.
8 Owe no one anything, unless to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.8 Seid niemand irgend etwas schuldig, als nur einander zu lieben; denn wer den anderen liebt, hat das GesetzGesetz erfüllt.
9 For, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not lust; and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.9 Denn das: „Du sollst nicht ehebrechen, du sollst nicht töten, du sollst nicht stehlen, laß dich nicht gelüstengelüsten“, und wenn es ein anderes Gebot gibt, ist in diesem WorteWorte zusammengefaßt: „Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst“.6
10 Love works no ill to its neighbour; love therefore is the whole law.10 Die Liebe tut dem Nächsten nichts Böses. So ist nun die Liebe die Summe7 des GesetzesGesetzes.
11 This also, knowing the time, that it is already time that we should be aroused out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.11 Und dieses noch, da wir die ZeitZeit erkennen, daß die StundeStunde schon da ist, daß wir aus dem Schlaf aufwachen sollen; denn jetzt ist unsere ErrettungErrettung8 näher, als da wir geglaubt haben:
12 The night is far spent, and the day is near; let us cast away therefore the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.12 Die NachtNacht ist weit vorgerückt, und der TagTag ist nahe9. Laßt uns nun die WerkeWerke der FinsternisFinsternis ablegen und die WaffenWaffen des LichtsLichts anziehen.
13 As in the day, let us walk becomingly; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and lasciviousness, not in strife and emulation.13 Laßt uns anständig wandeln wie am TageTage; nicht in Schwelgereien und Trinkgelagen, nicht in Unzucht und AusschweifungenAusschweifungen, nicht in StreitStreit und Neid10;
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not take forethought for the flesh to fulfil its lusts.14 sondern ziehet den HerrnHerrn JesusJesus ChristusChristus an, und treibet nicht Vorsorge für das FleischFleisch zur Erfüllung seiner Lüste11.
