1 But it displeased3415 Jonah3124 exceedingly1419 7451, and he was very angry2734. 2 And he prayed6419 unto the LORD3068, and said559, I pray577 thee, O LORD3068, was not this my saying1697, when I was yet in my country127? Therefore I fled1272 before6923 unto Tarshish8659: for I knew3045 that thou art a gracious2587 God410, and merciful7349, slow750 to anger639, and of great7227 kindness2617, and repentest5162 thee of the evil7451. 3 Therefore now, O LORD3068, take3947, I beseech thee, my life5315 from me; for it is better2896 for me to die4194 than to live2416. 4 Then said559 the LORD3068, Doest thou well3190 to be angry2734?¹

5 So Jonah3124 went out3318 of the city5892, and sat3427 on the east side6924 of the city5892, and there made6213 him a booth5521, and sat3427 under it in the shadow6738, till he might see7200 what would become of the city5892. 6 And the LORD3068 God430 prepared4487 a gourd7021, and made it to come up5927 over Jonah3124, that it might be a shadow6738 over his head7218, to deliver5337 him from his grief7451. So Jonah3124 was exceeding1419 8057 glad8055 of the gourd7021.²³ 7 But God430 prepared4487 a worm8438 when the morning7837 rose5927 the next day4283, and it smote5221 the gourd7021 that it withered3001. 8 And it came to pass, when the sun8121 did arise2224, that God430 prepared4487 a vehement2759 east6921 wind7307; and the sun8121 beat5221 upon the head7218 of Jonah3124, that he fainted5968, and wished7592 in himself5315 to die4191, and said559, It is better2896 for me to die4194 than to live2416.⁴ 9 And God430 said559 to Jonah3124, Doest thou well3190 to be angry2734 for the gourd7021? And he said559, I do well3190 to be angry2734, even unto death4194.⁵⁶ 10 Then said559 the LORD3068, Thou hast had pity2347 on the gourd7021, for the which thou hast not laboured5998, neither madest it grow1431; which came up in a night1121 3915, and perished6 in a night1121 3915:⁷⁸ 11 And should not I spare2347 Nineveh5210, that great1419 city5892, wherein are3426 more7235 than sixscore8147 6240 thousand7239 persons120 that cannot discern3045 between their right hand3225 and their left hand8040; and also much7227 cattle929?
